Data Analytics Program Director

This position will lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of a strategic and comprehensive enterprise analytics, data governance, and data management program. This will include the development and continuous enhancement of business intelligence reporting, data science models, data architecture, analytics outreach, and a data governance framework. In addition, this position will provide leadership to the business and information technology functions of the organization, and act as the subject matter expert for all data analytic topics. Participate in overall business technology planning while providing current knowledge and future vision of analytic technologies, platforms, and systems. Lastly, this position will provide management and oversight of SMECO analytics technology team members.
The preferred candidate will have experience and knowledge working with distribution electric cooperatives in a diverse range of utility data. Microsoft Power BI and Oracle data base expertise is desired.
Candidates are required to have a Bachelor’s or advanced degree in a rigorous quantitative, technical or scientific subject, including data science, math and statistics, computer science, engineering or related field. Professional certifications in advanced analytics or data science preferred. Additional training in data strategy, research techniques, business development, or fundamentals of electric distribution cooperatives are a plus.
Candidates are required to have minimum ten years of progressive work experience in data analytics. Previous experience working in the electric utility industry and working knowledge of Microsoft Power BI is highly desirable. Proven experience managing small and medium sized projects, spearheading innovative technology and data strategy initiatives with diverse groups of stakeholders.

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative was founded in 1937. Through the Rural Electrification Administration, the co-op received a loan of $165,000 to construct 175 miles of line to serve 600 customer-members. SMECO operated a generating plant at Popes Creek, Maryland, from 1938 to 1953. SMECO has had five general managers: 1938, Forrest Coakley; 1974, Walter H. Smith; 1989, I. Wayne Swann; 2003, Austin J. Slater, Jr.; and 2020, Sonja Cox. As of January 2020, SMECO served 165,000 customers and is one of the largest electric co-ops in the country.
